Logo.jpg Edinburgh: Old Calton Burial Grounds

Together with Greyfriars and Canongate, the brooding Old Calton Cemetery holds the bulk of Edinburgh's dead. Legend holds the hill is doubled cursed by restless spirits and as a hanging ground, but visitors today seek refuge in the silence beneath spreading oak trees. A huge weathered obelisk visible for miles around marks the Martyr's Monument to deportees to Australia, detailed tradesmen's memorials ringing its base. Pollution smeared headstones abut freestanding crosses and richly carved blocks. Elaborate memento mori engravings are cut into many of the sandstone tombs erected throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Notables buried here are a roll of Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, including architect Robert Burn in a family mausoleum, scientist John Playfair, painter David Allan, and John Haig. The most famous of them all, David Hume, lies in a cylindrical tower on the Edinburgh skyline. Scrolled iron gates guard the entrance, facing the only Civil War memorial erected outside the US. A copper statue of President Lincoln stands above a bronze freed slave.
