Cabals

At the heart of Awakened society is the cabal, the foundation for all greater structures beyond it. A Consilium is nothing without the cabals constituting its membership. The strongest ties bind together mages with a purpose, a shared mandate that may be motivated by a common interest or harrowing experience. Newly Awakened mages start their new lives apprenticed into a cabal until they find their footing, and graduate into selective groups over time.

Solitaries

"'Cackling,' to a witch... meant your mind drifting away from its anchor. It meant you were losing your grip. It meant you thinking that the fact that you knew more than anyone else in your village made you better than them. It meant right and wrong were negotiable. What stopped this was the habit of visiting. Witches visited other witches all the time... Mostly it was to keep an eye on one another."
-- Terry Pratchett, Wintersmith

The Royal Society views solitary mages, those without permanent affiliations to a cabal, with equal parts concern and suspicion. Solitaries owe their allegiance to none but their Order, and lack the safety net of concerned peers who might intervene if a mage slips into Hubris or worse. In short, if no one witnesses whether he might be cackling, they cannot be sure he's all there.

Cabal Creation

NPC Cabals

The Royal Society recognizes the following NPC cabals as holding membership and in good standing. They typically do not accept player characters as new members; however, they will be an important part of the Awakened community, allying or opposing you.

An Dà Shealladh

An Dà Shealladh
Speaker: Orpheus

The elder cabal of Guardians of the Veil pursues an elusive assignment largely unknown to the Fellows of the Royal Society. Speculation thrives about the cause sufficient to unite two Magisters of opposing Orders. An Dà Shealladh delves into the portents rising around Scotland, preserving the signs against tampering or abuse. Their deeper game remains much a mystery.

The Long Game

The Long Game

  • Speaker: Epikoros
  • Cabal House: Flat overlooking The Last Drop

This mixed-Order cabal operates out of Grassmarket with the complex goal of strengthening the Royal Society and protecting the sleepers, ghosts, and other uninitiated residents of Edinburgh. As alluded to in their chess-related name and associated symbology, the Long Game cultivates long-term, strategic, deliberate plans to shape the community to its own ends. Its members watch carefully for subtle bellwethers of impending trouble.

The Grail Society

Grail Society
Speaker: Lleu

Folklore long associated Scotland and Arthurian mythology, and the Awakened connect Camelot to Atlantis. The Grail Society seeks to restore a mystical connection between Edinburgh and the Supernal Realm by reinforcing dormant anchors and creating new ones. By their inspirational example, they intend to raise the Ocean Spire again in the heart of Scotland and usher in a new era of stability and prosperity. The Thearch-dominated cabal eloquently argues their achievements stand as a testament to their success.

The cabal, named for the legendary Caledonian war chief who defied the Romans, strives to overcome divisions among the Wise of the Royal Society. Combining their interests in finance, the government, and the media, the Heirs of Calgacus are dedicated to guarding and expanding the resources of the Consilium. They aim to thwart the Seers of the Throne from gaining a controlling stake in the hearts and minds of the city.

Hounds of Annwn
Speaker: Urien

An elder cabal drawn exclusively from the Steel Legion dedicates itself to preserving the sanctity of the deceased and releasing the restless dead from their bondage. Hounds hide their membership in the cabal except for Urien, the better to pursue those who desecrate ghosts relentlessly.

The "Stained" examine ancient Scottish mystical traditions for evidence of Supernal truths brought to the island ages ago, resurrecting the arts and spellcraft of the lost Picts. They ritually mark their skin with enchanted woad tattoos at initiation, and pursue an ascetic lifestyle to heighten their connection with the land and its spirits. Broichan, their speaker, is renowned as the Druid of Alba.
